Temporary Residents of Canada

Canada welcomes more than 20 million temporary residents each year, such as visitors, international students, and temporary foreign workers. Except for Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and American citizens, all individuals (foreign nationals) from other countries and territories need to obtain a temporary resident visa (TRV) or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to enter Canada as a temporary resident of Canada. Extension of temporary residence may be applied for from within Canada for a foreign national who wants to stay longer for the purposes of extended visit, study, or work – this requires the foreign national to obtain a valid visitor record, extension of study permit or work permit. In exceptional circumstances, and individual, who does not meet the requirements of Canada’s immigration law, may apply for a temporary resident permit (TRP) in order to enter or remain temporarily in Canada.
